Being a player of the year is really nothing new for Eric Rolland. In fact, in 1993 he was the Minnesota PGA Junior Player of the Year. That was the start of great things as Eric went on to be All-Conference, All-District and then All-American at Augsburg College.

Eric, from Woodhill CC, earned his first Assistant’s Player of the Year award by winning the Assistant’s Championship in September.  In one word, Eric describes this season as rewarding.  “This season had a lot of ups and downs and to come out on top is rewarding,” he recently commented via email.

Rolland’s grandfather who was a member at Stillwater Country Club  introduced him to golf when he was 10-years old. “Mike Tracy was the first PGA pro I ever met. He is just as cool now as he was then,” quipped Rolland. Eric split time with grandpa at Stillwater and Brightwood Hills in New Brighton where he played daily thanks to a summer pass purchased by his mother. A ploy to keep him out of the house? Perhaps. Regardless, it seems like the investment in the pass is paying off.

Eric shared with us the significance of winning Player of the Year honors saying that there are two pieces. The first is validating the process of improvement. “There are times when the game gets rough and it seems that scores won’t get better, but by focusing on the right things the results eventually do come,” he said. Secondly, Eric says winning is significant because of the number of quality players in the Minnesota Section.

“To be the Player of the Year certainly ranks up high on the list of playing accomplishments for me and (it) is an honor. My ultimate goal as a player is to keep improving in all aspects of the game and just let the results happen.”

His last “player of the year” honors kick started all sorts of tremendous accomplishments. Will this recognition do the same 20-years later? We’ll have to wait and see.
