Focus on Fashion for 2015 Golf Season

When you mention the words “golf” and “fashion,” you might immediately think of white belts, ugly shoes, and the sometimes outrageous outfits worn on the PGA Tour (see: Daly, John). In fact, the PGA Tour website even has an entire section Minnesota PGA Golf Fashiondevoted to the topic, The Style Report. Still, while golf fashion has a reputation for going over the top, it can also be very elegant and stylish. So, with spring in our future (we hope), we decided to look ahead to the golf season and focus on fashion.

We checked in with 2009 Minnesota PGA Teacher of the Year Dee Forsberg McCullagh for her take on the latest fashion trends for men and women as they prepare for the upcoming golf season. Her husband, Gerald McCullagh, has been known to model golf fashion from time to time (in addition to also being an excellent instructor).

Men’s Golf Fashions

On the men’s side, Dee and Gerald like the Ralph Lauren RLX line. “Its materials and colors are perfect for summer golf in Minnesota. Its colors are bright and the patterns favor horizontal stripes and floral for the shirts,” Dee explains.

“Peter Millar is another clothing line that should be considered for classic golf wear,” she says. “This year they are showing sweaters that are made from cotton cashmere and also feature patterns that favor stripes. For dinner at the club, they also have a wonderful line of button-down dress shirts.”

Women’s Fashions

On the women’s side, Dee loves JoFit. “It’s a fun line of ladies clothing that has a fit suitable for the 30+ year old, featuring fun, flirty designs and bright, colorful patterns.”

Dee recommends that both men and women look for clothes that move and stretch during the golf swing. Fabrics that wick moisture away also keep you cool during the hot summer months.

Fashion Do’s:

  • Match your shorts to the stripe in the shirt.
  • Add flair by adding a belt of similar colors.
  • If you consistently hit your drives in the trees, consider camouflage colors so you don’t stand out (just kidding).

Fashion Don’ts:

  • Cutoff shorts
  • Cargo shorts
  • Tee-shirts

What other trends did you see at the PGA show this year? Pro shops run by Section members often lead the way on what becomes popular when it comes to golf fashion and certain brands always seem timeless. Be sure and check out the latest from Cutter and Buck, Nike Golf, Bobby Jones, and the other brands listed above as we slowly get closer to the 2015 Minnesota golf season.
