September 14, 2015

The final event of the 2016 Drive Chip & Putt Championship within the Minnesota Section has come to a close with the Regional Qualifier finishing up at Hazeltine National Golf Club on Saturday, September 12th, 2015. There were a total of 81 participants who attended the Regional Qualifier having qualified at their respective sites across the United States. At the event were both boys and girls from the ages of 7 to 15 competing in four different age divisions: 7-9, 10-11, 12-13, and 14-15.

The top three players and performances were awarded in each of the three categories: Drive, Chip and Putt as well as the Overall winners. The Overall winner in each gender and age division will move on to play in the 2016 Drive, Chip and Putt Championship at Augusta National Golf Club on April 3rd, 2016; the weekend prior to the historic Masters Tournament. These eight players included Megan Whittaker, Caleb Kimmel, Kaitlyn Hanna, Tate Herrenbruck, Kathryn VanArragon, JP Hepler, Avery Zweig, and Sam Udovich. Most notably, Kathryn VanArragon (Girls 10-11 division) of Blaine, MN and Sam Udovich (Boys 7-9 division) of Inver Grove Heights, MN will be representing the state of Minnesota and the Minnesota Section in the national tournament.

Chandler Withington, Head Professional of the Hazeltine National Golf Club, was very gracious in hosting and extremely helpful with his involvement as well as the Hazeltine staff on this special day. The day meant a lot to all of those participating including their parents; especially with a trip to Augusta on the line. This was evident by the reactions of the winners who hugged and embraced family members once they saw their names posted with the highest scores, and their huge smiles as they shook the Head Professional’s hand accepting their medals.

Best of luck to all those participating in the national tournament and were fortunate enough to have earned a trip to such a storied golf course!
