The award is given to a PGA Professional who personally displays outstanding integrity, character, and leadership through a commitment to mentoring as well as making significant impacts on the careers of PGA Professionals. As the Head PGA Professional at Wayzata Country Club, Dick has had over 30 Assistant PGA Professionals come through under his supervision and either accept larger roles elsewhere or move onto other Sections. He has been at Wayzata Country Club for 22 years, and he has been responsible for the education and development of all the Assistants involved during that time. Dick has made a large impact on his facility, the Section, and all of those who were fortunate enough to learn and be educated underneath him.

Hometown: Minneapolis, MN

Golf Background:

Dick began his golf career working at Gross National Golf Club in Minneapolis, MN while attending Edison High School. After, he furthered his education at Gustavus Adolphus College before getting into the golf business in Minnesota in 1976. He started as a Caddy Master at Wayzata Country Club before eventually taking over as the Head PGA Professional in 1994.

When and why did you decide to become a PGA Professional?

“I decided shortly after I began working at Wayzata Country Club as a Caddy Master that I was interested in the golf business. I worked under Homer Martinson, the first Head PGA Professional at the facility, and after 3-4 weeks of work, I was wondering if I could do this for a living because I really enjoyed the atmosphere and membership management aspect.”

What does winning this award mean to you?

“I have been fortunate enough to have some really good Assistants—around twelve of them have gone on to be Head PGA Professionals—it is fun to be a part of their development. It is really neat to be recognized with this award.”
