John Dahl-2015 Professional of the Year

The 2015 Section Professional of the Year is John Dahl of Oxbow Country Club in Oxbow, ND. The PGA Golf Professional of the Year Award is one of the highest honors the Association can bestow on a PGA Professional. This person’s contributions to the game embody and exemplify the complete PGA Professional. Criteria for the award includes excellence in overall performance, service to the Section and Association, leadership—ability to inspire fellow Golf Professionals, and promotion of the game of golf.

John is one of the most respected Golf Professionals that the Minnesota Section has to offer. This is evident as he has been voted Section Teacher of the Year an impressive three times, and he is listed as a top 100 Teacher in the country—making him an exceptional asset to the Section. John has been the Head Golf Professional at Oxbow Country Club for nearly 34 years and played an intricate role in making Oxbow Country Club an elite golf facility. He has been inducted into his high school’s and college’s Hall of Fame on top of the North Dakota Golf Association Hall of Fame. John is a leader in the community and a phenomenal teacher and promoter of the game; he truly represents the model PGA Professional.

Hometown: Fargo, ND

Golf Background:

John went to college at North Dakota State University prior to getting into the golf business in 1973 at Fargo Country Club. After three years at Fargo Country Club, he spent three years working under Larry Murphy at Moorhead Country Club. Then in 1979, he crossed the border to work at Watertown Golf Course in Watertown, SD. John ultimately decided to return to North Dakota where he is finishing his 33rd year at Oxbow Country Club.

When and why did you decide to become a PGA Professional?

“I played golf all my life since I was about ten years old. I worked around the golf industry at a young age and knew this was what I wanted to do. I became a PGA Professional in 1974 as an Apprentice.”

What does winning this award mean to you?

“It means a lot. Anytime you get an award and recognized by your peers, it is an honor. I feel very lucky and fortunate to say the least.”

1995, 1997 & 2000 Section Teacher of the Year, 2002 & 2005 Dakota Chapter Teacher of the Year
