Local Amateur Frankie Capan Proves His Worth in 2016 Puerto Rico Open

March 29, 2016

Playing in his first PGA Tour event this past Thursday at Coco Beach Golf Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico as a 16-year-old, Frankie Capan of North Oaks, MN did not disappoint.

Capan, who has played in multiple Minnesota Section Junior Golf events over the years, demonstrated why he belonged in the field of 128 at the 2016 Puerto Rico Open amongst decorated players such as Ian Poulter, Luke Donald, David Toms, and John Daly.

He earned an exemption earlier this year in January by winning the Puerto Rico Junior Open, which included breaking the tournament scoring record by two strokes at 204. “My iron game was on point all three days, I gave myself a lot of opportunities on the greens. I was able to establish a comfortable lead from the beginning,” said Capan in regards to his victory.

Frankie did not let the possibility of being able to compete in his first PGA Tour event hinder his focus, “there was a lot of talk about it amongst competitors. I made sure to focus on the task at hand.” His confidence never wavered either, “I knew I had a great chance prior to the tournament and that sentiment never changed.”

The impressive start to the 2016 calendar year did not end there for Capan, he made noise in the first round of the 2016 Puerto Rico Open by shooting a 1-over 73.

Flirting with the cut line, Capan responded well to begin the second round, “I started par-eagle-birdie; after that, I knew I had real good shot at making the cut.”

Unfortunately, a costly double-bogey on the 7th hole followed by a bogey on the par-3, 8th, negated his stellar start. He would finish strong with a 1-under on the back nine, but it was not enough as he missed the cut by a mere one stroke at even par for the tournament.

Still, one heck of a performance by the local amateur.

“It was a great experience, surreal honestly. I was looking forward to meeting everyone and the practice rounds,” Capan said. “My practice round with Aaron Baddeley was special, that is a player I have really looked up to.”

Expect to hear more of this name in the future. Capan has only scratched the surface of his potential.
