Berry Wins Third Consecutive Minnesota Senior PGA Championship

September 8, 2016

For the third consecutive year, Don Berry walked away victorious in the Minnesota Senior PGA Championship held at Faribault Golf Club. Berry began the second round one shot ahead of George Smith of Second Swing and three shots in front of Dale Jones of Mendakota CC; both of whom joined him in the final pairing.

The first round of play was delayed multiple times yesterday due to unplayable conditions on the course. A majority of groups were able to finish their rounds before play was eventually suspended due to darkness at 7:15pm last night. A few groups finished their first rounds this morning when play officially resumed at 9:00am. Second round tee times began at 10:15, and the final pairing of Berry, Smith and Jones teed off at 11:45am.

Berry was fortunate enough to be a part of the majority that finished before play was suspended late last night, “overall, I played really well yesterday.” said the defending champion who finished at 5-under. “It was nice to be able to finish the entire first round; especially not having to come back early today to finish.”

He got off to a great start in the second round with birdies on the par-4 1st and par-4 4th to move to 7-under and take a commanding lead. After that Berry ran into a little bit of trouble on his front nine.

“I missed a short, par putt on the 5th hole and the 7th,” said Berry. “This is a tricky, little course; if you don’t avoid the trouble spots, it can hurt.”

Berry bounced back with a clutch birdie putt on the par-5 9th after a great wedge shot put him to within 3-feet of the pin. From there, he never looked back.

Playing partners Smith and Jones struggled to establish themselves, while Berry cruised to a 2-under 70 and his third straight Minnesota Senior PGA Championship.

“He [Berry] just doesn’t make mistakes,” said Smith. “It is really impressive.”

Berry finished with a 7-under 137 two-day total—good enough for a six shot victory over second place finishers Craig Brischke of Tanners Brook GC and Mike Flaherty of Dakota Pines GC.

Berry, no stranger to the national stage, will be heading to the 28th Senior PGA Professional Championship at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida on Nov. 17-20, 2016. He finished last year’s Senior Professional Championship T-35th, earning him a spot in last year’s Senior PGA Championship.

This year, he has higher aspirations, “the goal is to ultimately play well but also try to win it,” said Berry of the PGA Professional Championship in November.

Also representing the Minnesota Section at the 28th Senior PGA Professional Championship will be Craig Brischke, Mike Flaherty, Mike Barge, Dale Jones, Brad Schmierer and George Smith.
