Steve Whillock Named 2016 Golf Professional of the Year

November 8, 2016

Steve Whillock of Oak Marsh Golf Club in Oakdale, Minn. is the 2016 Golf Professional of the Year in the Minnesota Section. This is one of, if not, the highest honors the Section can reward a golf professional with for his or her achievements. This recognition stems from a wide variety of services carried out by the golf professional.

Similar to the criterion for Teacher of the Year, Golf Professional of the Year is awarded to an individual that excels in the following: overall performance as a golf professional, service to the Section and Association, leadership skills, service as a role and inspiration to other golf professionals and promotion and growth of the game of golf.

“It means a lot to win this award, being recognized by the Board and the membership,” said Whillock passionately. “It’s humbling also because I know there are a lot people that deserve the same accolades and may not receive this sort of recognition.”

Steve has worked as a golf professional since 1980 and been a member of the PGA since 1986. In addition to running a golf business, his instruction and teaching occupy a majority of his time.  Whillock has a determination about him to discover and implement the physical and mental aspects of the game.

He is committed to bringing success to his facility, Oak Marsh Golf Club, establishing relationships in the community and other local golfers. He is a hard worker and leader that is loyal and dedicated to his consumers and staff. Steve truly enjoys the day-to-day operations of the golf business and the interactions that arise from it.

His personal accomplishments are not the only part of his career that he takes pride in, he wallows in the success of past colleagues and employees; especially those that have used his training and examples to succeed in their respective golf endeavors. Many have moved on to be golf professionals and managers in some aspect or another.

“It is not uncommon for Steve to call each customer by their name on a daily basis,” said Steve’s longtime wife, Roslyn. “It’s simple but golden when it comes to customer loyalty.”

This serves as one minor example of how Steve approached everyday with the same passion and emphasis on not only, customer retention, but the whole operation.

Steve has a growing presence in the social media world. He promotes his facility and all of its upcoming events via Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. His relentless pursuit of promoting the game and his facility in the community is very admirable and sets a proper example for his peers.

Whillock is a board member of the Midwest Golf Course Owners Association; he also is on the EDC (Economic Development Corporation) Board in Oakdale. On top that, he was a past Board member of the Section and Chairman of the Tournament Committee.

He illustrates what the model Section member and golf professional should look like on a daily basis.

Congratulations and thank you for your services to the Section, Steve.
