Derek Holmes Wins 2016 Assistant Player of the Year

November 9, 2016

The 2016 Assistant Player of the Year is Derek Holmes of Dellwood Country Club in Dellwood, Minn. After two Top 5 finishes in Assistant Player of the Year Rankings in the past three years, Holmes had his break-through season this year winning Assistant Player of the Year by just under 100 points.

The 30-year-old, Cottage Grove native, had 3 wins on the season but most notably won the season long Assistants’ Match Play Championship.

“The highlight of the season would have to be winning the Assistants’ Match Play Championship because I had lost on the 18th hole twice in previous years,” said Holmes. “Also, I shot a 69 earlier in the year at the PGA Professional National Championship in New York; showing I could compete with the best.”

In addition to the Assistants’ Match Play victory, he won Assistants’ Event #2 and had Top 3 finishes in four of the five Assistants’ events.

“Confidence was big for me this year, not putting so much pressure on myself,” he stressed. “Go out and have fun playing golf again.”

Derek, with a third place finish in the National Car Rental Minnesota PGA Assistant Championship, traveled to Florida for the 40th National Car Rental PGA Assistant Championship at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, FL. He had a great showing finishing 3-over and in a tie for 19th in a field of 132 (all four Minnesota Section Assistants made the cut!)

“Moving forward, a goal of mine is to win Section Player of the Year,” Holmes emphasized about his future. “In addition, I want to make it back to the PGA Assistant and PGA Professional Championships. This will come with more consistency.”

Congratulations on a great season and winning Assistant Player of the Year, Derek.
